Rione Terra

Il Rione Terra è il primo nucleo abitativo di Pozzuoli e fu abitato fin dal 194 avanti Cristo, quando l’antica “Puteoli” (fondata nel 529 avanti Cristo dagli esuli dell’isola di Samo, che la chiamarono “Dicearchia”, ossia “governo dei giusti”) divenne colonia romana e principale porto commerciale di Roma.  La rocca, costruita a circa 33 metri sul livello del mare, domina il golfo di Pozzuoli su tre fronti e nell’antichità consentiva ai suoi abitanti di controllare tutti i traffici commerciali nonché di essere utilizzata come baluardo difensivo in caso di attacchi esterni. Dopo la nascita del porto di Ostia ed il decadimento dell’Impero Romano, i confini di Pozzuoli furono ridotti al solo Rione Terra, che, non potendosi espandere, iniziò a stratificarsi al suo interno con costruzioni edificate su quelle che erano in precedenza le mura romane. Il Rione Terra è stato abitato fino al 2 marzo 1970, quando a causa del bradisismo fu sgomberato. Una campagna di scavi archeologici iniziata nel 1993 ha consentito di far venire alla luce una città sotterranea di epoca romana a circa 15 metri dalle fondamenta degli edifici seicenteschi, nel frattempo quasi del tutto ristrutturati ad uso turistico-ricettivo. Il Rione Terra, nella porzione riattata, è visitabile, ad iniziare dal Duomo (edificato sopra le mura del Tempio di Augusto) riaperto nel maggio 2014 dopo il devastante incendio del 1964. È visitabile anche il percorso archeologico sotterraneo, in cui è possibile passeggiare lungo le strade principali dell’antica “Puteoli” riscoprendone edifici, depositi, forni, macine, portici, botteghe e magazzini.

Rione Terra is the first settlement of Pozzuoli, it was inhabited since 194 BC, when the ancient “Puteoli” (founded in 529 BC by the exiles of the island of Samos, who called it “Dicearchia“, i.e. “government of the righteous“) became a Roman colony and the main commercial port of Rome. The fortress, built about 33 meters above sea level, dominates the gulf of Pozzuoli on three fronts and in ancient times allowed its inhabitants to control all commercial traffic and to be used as a defensive bulwark in case of external attacks. After the birth of the port of Ostia and the decay of the Roman Empire, the borders of Pozzuoli were reduced to the only Rione Terra, which, unable to expand, began to stratify inside with buildings built on what were previously the Roman walls. Rione Terra was inhabited until March 2, 1970, when it was evacuated due to bradyseism. An archaeological excavation campaign begun in 1993 has made it possible to bring to light an underground city from the Roman era about 15 meters from the foundations of the seventeenth-century buildings, which in the meantime have been almost completely renovated for tourist-accommodation use. The renovated portion of Rione Terra can be visited, starting with the Cathedral (built above the walls of the Temple of Augustus) reopened in May 2014 after the devastating fire of 1964. The underground archaeological itinerary can also be visited, where it is possible to walk along the main roads of the ancient “Puteoli” rediscovering buildings, stores, ovens, millstones, arcades, shops and warehouses.
