Il vulcano Solfatara, dal cratere ellittico (m.770, m.580), risale a circa 4000 anni fa ed è l'unico dei Campi Flegrei ancora attivo con impressionanti manifestazioni fumaroliche.
L'ultima eruzione, peraltro storicamente non accertata, risalirebbe al 1198.

La Solfatara ha un'estensione di circa 33 ettari ed è un'oasi naturalistica che presenta oltre che i noti fenomeni vulcanici, quali fumarole saune fangaie, anche zone boschive e di zone di macchia mediterranea nonchè singolarità naturali, geologiche, botaniche e faunistiche. |
Spanning 33 hectars, volcano Solfatara is a wildlife preservation site which offers the starting point for an interesting hike with the presence, in addition to the renown volcanic phenomena, such as the fumarioles, the mofete and small mud volcanoes. |

La visita della Solfatara ha radici antiche e infatti costituiva una tappa obbligata del "Grand Tour", viaggio istruttivo e di svago che gli aristocratici europei compivano in Italia nel 700. Vennero Goethe e Standahl. La visita dura 45' circa. Oggi al suo interno ospita un campeggio internazionale. |
The visit to the Solfatara goes back to ancient times since it made up one of the necessary stops of the "Grand Tour", educational and leisure trip that the European aristocrats would accomplish above all in Italy and France already in the Eightenth century. The average lenght of the visit is 45 minutes. There is inside the Solfatara today an international campsite.
